THE CHALLENGE

Latinos are underrepresented in critical conversations about our nation’s courts, despite being disproportionately affected and harmed by recent court decisions on immigration, health, civil rights, and other issues important to our community. Worse yet, President Trump’s unabashedly partisan, mostly white, and too often unqualified judicial appointments severely undermined the diversity and integrity of U.S. federal courts — with a damaging impact for years to come on the Latino community. Our nation must make a clean break with a centuries-old legal tradition that excludes the interests of Latinos and other underrepresented groups in this country both from the federal bench and the legal decisions courts make for us.

OUR MISSION

Latinos for a Fair Judiciary is dedicated to calling out the importance of the courts in the lives of U.S. Latinos and elevating diverse voices on the most pressing legal issues facing our nation today. Our mission is two-fold: (1) Advancing the appointment of Latino federal judges to help ensure that the legal decisions that shape our society recognize the reality of many of those who live in it; and (2) Informing and activating Latinos around the legal issues that affect us and the role federal courts play in our community’s ability to thrive and prosper.

WHO WE ARE

We are a non-partisan group of advocates, communications strategists, and attorneys who care about the impact federal courts have on Latino communities. As part of our work, LFJ regularly partners with elected officials, legal, civil rights, labor, academic and political leaders who are aligned with our objectives and overall mission to deepen our impact.

WHAT WE DO

We're rising to ensure the Latino community is not just represented in the bench of federal judges — but also in the national conversation about our judiciary, especially where our numbers are growing and organizing power is mounting. Through media outreach, congressional advocacy, and digital organizing, we strive to make Latino voices and priorities heard in legal debates and decisions around who is appointed to the federal bench. We provide Latinos for a Fair Judiciary partners with targeted messaging, media training, and opportunities to join the national conversation about the courts.

OUR HISTORY

We were formed in April 2005 under the name Hispanics for a Fair Judiciary and revived in 2009 to build support for Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s confirmation. In 2010, we used the nomination and confirmation process for Justice Elena Kagan as an opportunity to continue promoting the inclusion of Latino voices in public debate and commentary. In 2016, we created pressure for senators in key states to consider Judge Merrick Garland as a replacement for Justice Scalia. In 2018, we re-branded as Latinos for a Fair Judiciary and worked to hold key senators accountable to the concerns of Latinos regarding the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh. In 2020, we mobilized to stop the rushed and illegitimate process to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
