VIDEO: Latinos for a Fair Judiciary Highlights Double Standard Between Sotomayor and Kavanaugh Nomination Hearings
U.S. Senators who scrutinized Sotomayor flip flop with Kavanaugh
Washington, D.C. — Today, Latinos for a Fair Judiciary released a video comparison of the confirmation hearings of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh highlighting the hypocrisy of certain U.S. Senators. In 2009, Republican senators demanded Sotomayor’s nomination process be fair and thorough, even calling the process “rigged and rushed.” Those who opposed Sotomayor’s nomination looked beyond her judicial record, twisted and misrepresented speeches she made, and denigrated her Latino identity.
Meanwhile, many of the same senators are now seeking to ram Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination through, arguing that his judicial record alone should provide enough information to confirm him. This is despite the fact that only 7% of his records have been released and he is now facing serious sexual harassment allegations.
“There is a clear double standard between the approach several senators took during Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s nomination process to what we saw during Judge Kavanaugh's hearings,” stated Andrea Nill Sanchez of Latinos for a Fair Judiciary. “It’s reprehensible that certain senators who scrutinized and ridiculed a Latina nominee simply for being proud of her heritage are willing to hastily approve her white, male counterpart without more information about what he believes and who he really is.”
