Latinos for a Fair Judiciary condemns Senate vote to confirm Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court

Washington, DC- Latinos for a Fair Judiciary condemns today’s rushed and illegitimate Senate vote to confirm Judge Amy Coney Barrett as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Today’s vote was the culmination of Republican-led court-packing strategy that began with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s blockade of Merrick Garland, President Barack Obama’s nominee to the Supreme Court in 2016, and went into overdrive during the current administration. This ill-gotten vote occurred after hastily arranged hearings and insufficient time for the Senate and the American public to review the nominee’s record, and took place with less than eight days until Election Day and after 60 million Americans have already cast their ballots.

Latinos for a Fair Judiciary opposed Barrett’s confirmation on the grounds of this rushed process and inappropriate timing, as well as her record and answers during the Senate judiciary committee on critical questions of equal justice and the role of the courts in defending the rights of minorities from discrimination and abuse of power by the majority.

Latinos for Fair Judiciary and our partners will continue to fight for the confirmation of judicial nominees who appreciate the significance of equitable access to healthcare and reproductive health services, voting rights, a fair and accurate census, LGBTQ equality, labor protections, and immigrants’ due process rights and the ability for families to stay together. The growing mobilizing power of the Latino community will make the difference in protecting our rights and our democracy.
