Latinos for a Fair Judiciary responds to Supreme Court decision and its continued attack on voting rights
Washington, DC- Today, the Supreme Court of the United States turned back the clock on voting rights in American and upheld the disenfranchisement of millions of citizens with its 6-3 decision to uphold Arizona’s discriminatory election provisions. In response, Latinos for a Fair Judiciary provided the following statement on today’s ruling and its impact on Latino voters in the United States.
"This is why the courts matter. Disenfranchisement of voters is a reversal of historical efforts to erase Jim Crow-era laws that created systemic barriers aimed to deny communities of color a voice in our nation's governance. Today's decision is a reminder that who sits on the federal bench matters; their diverse experience, backgrounds and perspectives add a much needed depth of understanding to issue decisions that impact millions of Americans who are regularly shoved to the corners and shadows of our society.
Now, Republican-led state legislatures are empowered to continue passing voter suppression laws with the goal of undermining the voting rights of people of color. As the nation’s largest minority population, Latinos are particularly impacted by these targeted voting provisions as representation in the judiciary - and in democracy - continues to not reflect the demographic reality of our nation."
