Joint Statement from Leading Latino Organizations on Confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court
Latino leaders honor historic confirmation of first Black female justice
Washington, DC — Today, Latinos for a Fair Judiciary (LFJ) and several of its partners — Mi Familia Vota, Voto Latino, Hispanic Federation, and LatinoJustice PRLDEF — celebrate the historic confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court of the United States. Judge Jackson has demonstrated the qualifications, brilliance, and commitment to equal justice and protection of constitutional rights for all. We are thrilled to celebrate Judge Jackson as she becomes the first Black woman to ever be confirmed to the high court.
In response to Judge Jackson’s bipartisan confirmation, leading Latino organizations – which represent prominent Latino legal and civil rights communities and leadership – are inspired and confident in Judge Jackson’s ability to uphold equal justice while ensuring the U.S. judicial system reflects the people it serves:
"Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is now a Supreme Court Justice. This is an incredible moment in our country's history. Judge Jackson’s commitment to advancing racial and social equity is much needed right now. Her approach to the multitude of legal issues that affect our communities — including voting rights, labor issues, criminal justice, immigration, along with many others is in line with Mi Familia Vota’s policy priorities,” said Héctor Sánchez Barba, Executive Director and CEO of Mi Familia Vota. “We have watched the confirmation process closely and are disappointed but not surprised by conservatives attacking and distorting the new Supreme Court Justice's record. Judge Jackson’s extraordinary breadth of experience in the nation’s second-highest court, makes her a strong and qualified Supreme Court Justice."
“This vote in favor of Judge Jackson is an important step towards her well-deserved confirmation. Judge Jackson isn’t just prepared to make history as the first Black woman on the US Supreme Court, she made clear at her hearings that she’s ready to step into the role as a champion for the principles of justice and equality laid out in our constitution. Despite ugly attempts to smear her or distort her record, Judge Jackson made clear that she has the intellect, the experience and the judgment to serve with distinction on our nation’s highest court,” said Maria Teresa Kumar, President and CEO of Voto Latino in a statement distributed this week.
“Hispanic Federation congratulates Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson on her confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court. This is, without a doubt, a historic moment for our entire nation - especially communities of color. It is essential that our most powerful institutions represent the diversity that shapes our country. Associate Justice Jackson has shown that she will be an exceptional addition to the nation’s highest court, exemplified by her expertise, temperament, and character. As the Supreme Court continues to hear critical cases that impact our health, civil rights, immigration, and political power, Judge Jackson’s confirmation is a welcoming addition to the country’s judicial branch,” said Frankie Miranda, President and CEO, Hispanic Federation.
“We congratulate Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson on her confirmation, and on becoming the first Black woman appointed to our highest court. We celebrate her background as a public defender and long history of working toward racial and social equity, in addition to other stellar judicial qualifications. She will bring a much-needed perspective and life experience that will inform Supreme Court decisions, to the benefit of our communities of color. We look forward to seeing her values and principles in action to address issues of deep concern to our Black and Latino communities,” said Lourdes M. Rosado, President & General Counsel of LatinoJustice PRLDEF.
“President Biden and Senate Democrats have made history. Not only is Justice Jackson one of the most qualified jurists ever appointed to the Supreme Court, her confirmation as the first Black woman justice paves the way for future judges of color to do the same in all levels of government,” said Andrea Nill Sanchez, Executive Director of Latinos for a Fair Judiciary. “We will need more judges like her not just on the Supreme Court — but also on lower state and federal courts to ensure that Latino communities are not overlooked and that everyone receives fair and equitable treatment under our nation’s laws.”
