ADVISORY: Latinos for a Fair Judiciary, MALDEF, LatinoJustice and NHLA Hold Call to Announce Opposition to All Court of Appeals Nominees Put Forth by Trump and to Denounce Lack of Latino Nominees

Washington, DC — Latinos for a Fair Judiciary, MALDEF (Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund), LatinoJustice PRLDEF, and the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA) will hold a media call on Friday, November 2, 2018 to announce opposition to all court of appeals nominees put forth by Donald J. Trump unless and until he puts forth a well-qualified Latino candidate.

 

During Trump’s presidency, 91% of judicial nominees have been white, the highest rate in nearly three decades.  Trump has not nominated a single Latino to any court of appeals seat.  One result is that the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, which is dominated by the state of Texas with its 40 percent Latino population, currently has no active Latino judge.  Most recently, Trump’s three nominees to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit did not include a single Latino. The Ninth Circuit covers nine states, including California, where Latinos account for 40 percent of the population. 

 

The media call will highlight continuing efforts to hold the current administration accountable and the importance of the Nov. 6 midterm elections, given the U.S. Senate’s role in confirming nominees to the federal bench.
